It’s hard not to feel like we almost have too much Spider-Man at the moment. Along with this version, we also had Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse last year. Both of which deal with very different aspects of the Spider-Man mythology. Add to that the successful PS4 game which dealt with yet another version of Spider-Man and you could potentially have too much of a good thing.
The great thing about both this movie and Homecoming is that director John Watts constantly finds fresh ways to present us with a Spider-Man film. It includes everything you may expect but not quite in the way you were expecting it. First of all, unlike any other movie featuring Peter Parker, this does not take place in New York but on a European vacation.
Tom Holland continues to be a perfect teenage Spider-Man who excels at being awkward around the girl he likes while also doing all the things you would expect from the young superhero. While on that topic, Zendaya is fantastic as MJ. She continually finds ways to make the character much more than the ginger, whinging damsel in distress from Sam Raimi’s films.
The rest of the cast are on fine form including Jake Gyllenhaal who looks like he is having the time of his life. The other way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe creates a different feel to these movies is by not having a good scientist accidentally turn bad as the villain. The villains Tom Holland has faced in these past two movies have both been fresh and something you may not have seen in a superhero movie before.
Ultimately, after the record breaking Avengers: Endgame, Marvel have yet again shown that they understand how to adapt their characters for the screen. While this may not match the dramatic heights of Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 or even the OTT action of Into the Spider-Verse, this is still a top-notch entry in the pantheon of Spider-Man movies.
